Pubs, Bars and Restaurants
Here are a few of our favourite (or quirky) places to eat and be merry 😊
Pubs and Bars
Did you know that there are said to be 365 pubs within the York City Walls? One pub to try for every day of the year 😊
The Blue Bell on Fossgate – possibly the smallest pub in York! You’ll be lucky to get a seat!
Back in the 1980s, two old sisters ran the place and the ‘back room’ servery consisted of drawing back a curtain to see what you wanted to order!
The Golden Fleece on ‘The Pavement’ is said to be the haunted by Lady Alice Peckett and up to 14 other spectres. It’s the most haunted pub in York; mind you, the place is full of all sorts of spirits! 😊
The Three Tuns pub on Coppergate is another favourite. It’s as close to the ‘Jorvik Viking Centre’ as you can get! The building is recorded a shaving been a pub from at least 1782.
The Habit café/pub on Goodramgate is very close to the York Minster Cathedral. Not too many people know that there is a roof terrace, there, which has a magnificent view of the roof of the Minster. It regularly has live music and an ‘open mic’ sessions. Bar food is available.
The Ackhorne (Acorn) pub is an 18th Century pub and can be found down a little cobbled street called St. Martin’s Lane which is off Micklegate. It’s a proper ‘old boozer’. They serve pub food and the Sunday lunch comes recommended!
The King’s Arms is down the steps from the Ouse Bridge on King’s Staith and is famous for being the most flooded pub in York. Open since 1783, it was once owned by Paul Heaton from The Beautiful South band. Look out for the flood level markers inside the bar area and see if you can spot the electric sockets high up the walls close to the ceiling! Serves good pub grub! 😊
Our ‘local’ is called The Crystal Palace and is a 2-minute walk from the apartment along Holgate Road. It’s a Samuel Smith’s “digital detox” pub so no mobile phone usage is allowed!! You have been warned 🙂 Enjoy the coal fire and lounge which feels like someone’s front room. The bar side has a pool table (we think)! It’s the only place where I’ve seen “Yorkshire whisky” on sale as the house brand. No comment.
Restaurants.
We have a new favourite!
Literally, a one-minute walk from The Walk, you will find La Terrazzina restaurant on the corner of Blossom Street and Holgate Road. It is run by a lovely Asian family who serve an extensive menu of Italian and Asian dishes at very reasonable prices. The added bonus is that YOU CAN TAKE YOUR OWN BOOZE! They also offer a take-away/delivery service. Tell Tanvir that we recommended them! 🙂
The Starr in The City (off Museum Street) is an award-wining brasserie-style restaurant nestled on the banks of the river Ouse accessed down a ramp and some old cobbled steps. It’s inside the old Engine House on the edge of York’s Museum Gardens, close to the historic Lendal Bridge and not too far away from the Railway Station.
Ate O’Clock is off High Ousegate and (so not too far away from where the River Ouse is famous for flooding the King’s Staith, the King’s Arms pub and the surrounding area!). It’s based on an exposed brick interior with lots of clocks set to 8 o’clock and serves Mediterranean dishes.
